Chiropractic medicine is sometimes overlooked as one of the more complex areas of medicine to study. The back and spine are essential to comfort and survival, and chiropractors can assist in any issues within the neuromusculoskeletal system, That system includes the nerves, bones, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Using things such as spinal adjustments or manipulation, mixed with other techniques, they can manage or even fix issues with neck or back pain.
In order to be a chiropractor however, candidates must go through years of schooling. Education for chiropractors happens in stages. In order to get into Doctor of Chiropractic programs, students must first complete three years of undergraduate study. They can then apply for an additional four year program to specialize in training for chiropractors. Chiropractic schools are known for being difficult to get into, as is the case with many medical programs.
Next, each graduate of a Doctor of Chiropractic program must obtain a license. It is illegal to practice medicine without a license, so this is an essential step! Once this step is completed, licensed doctors may establish their own practice and begin seeing patients.
Even once a chiropractor can see patients, they will learn new things such as techniques each day, and will perfect their own methods over years of practice. The great thing about chiropractors is that they can often solve back issues before surgery is necessary; if someone sees a surgeon first, 42.7% have surgery, but only 1.5% of those who see a chiropractor need surgery. So there is definitely something to be said about those techniques!
