What is an Ophthalmologist?

An ophthalmologist differs from an optometrist. If these two terms cause you confusion or get mixed up in your mind, you’re not alone! Many folks equate ophthalmologists and optometrists as being the same type of medical providers. But the truth is, their respective scopes of practice differ a great deal.

An ophthalmologist handles the medical and surgical aspects of eye care. While both ophthalmologists and optometrists treat the human eye, the exact treatments they provide are very different. An optometrist will examine, analyze, and treat your vision issues. This is the person who will perform a vision test and prescribe you glasses or contacts.

An ophthalmologist, on the other hand, performs the surgical components of eye care. An ophthalmologist is someone who treats eye disorders and diseases and performs surgery or other medical procedures to address those issues.

You can visit your local eye and vision center to learn more about the differences between these types of eye care providers. If you are unsure what type of treatment you need specifically, the associates at your nearest eye care center can answer all your questions for you.
