What is a mental health crisis?

A mental health crisis is when a person’s emotional and mental state puts them or someone else in danger and prevents them from being able to care for themselves or others effectively. In addition, people who go through a mental health crisis can’t effectively function as optimally as possible.

What are the signs of a mental health crisis?

1. Neglect of personal hygiene. If a person goes through this crisis, they may not be able to bathe properly or feel that taking personal hygiene is a necessity to do. In the worst scenarios, some people might go for days without taking a bath.

2. Dramatic changes in sleeping habits. Most people who go through this crisis often have a hard time sleeping. They often overthink situations and themselves, making it hard to sleep. Often, they may not encounter feelings of sleepiness due to stress factors that don’t allow them to function normally. It can either be not sleeping often or entirely; this change in sleeping pattern may result in a significant weight gain or loss over the course of the crisis.
