When women are infertile, approximately 44% of them will seek medical assistance with the hope of having a baby. When medical intervention has been sought, roughly 65% of these women were able to give birth.
A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study provided an analysis of data collected from the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth. After completing their analysis, it was determined that 7.5% of sexually-experienced men under the age of 45 claimed to have visited a fertility doctor at some point in their life.
Data shows that while a third of fertility issues are usually attributed to women, another third are attributed to men. The remaining third, however, tends to be a combination of issues with both partners or is unable to be determined.
Women’s fertility tends to begin declining when they reach 30. This decline will continue, and at a larger rate, after women turn 35. Only 2 out of 5 women that choose to become pregnant by the time they are 40 will be able to carry a baby to term.
Women are considered to be the most fertile when they are between 20 and 24. When a healthy couple with normal functioning reproductive systems is between the ages of 29 to 33, they actually have just a 20% to 25% chance of conceiving in a particular month.
Infertility is treated with a variety of methods, which will depend on the couples’ presenting issues. Around 85% to 90% respond to drug therapy or surgical procedures. In vitro fertilization, or the IVF treatment process, may be recommended by a fertility expert. In addition to the IVF treatment process, some couples may undergo artificial insemination or other types of interventions.
When couples are concerned about the cost of fertility treatments, it’s important to note that recent insurance laws have been passed in 15 states. These laws require that insurance policies cover some of the costs associated with infertility treatments. The following states have these laws in place:
- Arkansas
- California
- Connecticut
- Hawaii
- Illinois
- Louisiana
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- Montana
- New Jersey
- New York
- Ohio<./li>
- Rhode Island
- Texas
- West Virginia
When a couple wants to have a family, and they are experiencing challenges in that regard, it’s important to seek the services of an infertility specialist. It’s possible that they may be able to conceive with infertility treatments.
