One of the most highly-touted benefits of omega 3 fatty acids are their impact on mental health: a number of studies have shown that products like fish oil capsules, which are high in omega-3, can reduce the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children, as well as improve mental skills like memory. Now, new research from a Swedish suggests that these benefits of omega 3 fatty acids are not only clinically important, but they might have have an especially significant impact on a certain subtype of ADHD.
The Sahlgrenska Academy, the University of Gothenburg’s institute of Health Scientists, recently tested 75 children and teenagers who had been diagnosed with ADHD. For three months, half of the study participants were given a combination of omega 3 and omega 6, while the rest were given a placebo. Next, all of the study participants were given omega 3 and omega 6 for another three months. The study was double-blind, meaning that neither the researchers nor the participants knew who was receiving the active product until the study was completed.
While the researchers reported that they did not see any major improvements in the group as a whole, 35% of the children with the ADHD subtype Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) saw their symptoms improve dramatically. According to the research team, this constitutes a “clinically relevant improvement”, suggesting that fish oil and other forms of omegas 3 and 6 could benefit patients with this condition. Additionally, blood tests of the study participants showed that all of the children and teenagers involved had a better balance of these two essential fatty acids in their systems.
ADHD is a neurological disorder associated with poor impulse and mood control, hyperactivity, and distraction. Meanwhile, although the diagnosis is beginning to fall out of favor in the United States, ADD has many of the same symptoms but is predominantly characterized by inattention. Both classifications can make life extremely difficult for people with these conditions, meaning that any form of effective treatment, ranging from omega 3 fatty acids to cognitive training can be extremely helpful to those with the disorders.
